Rudy G.
Hello, music freaks, my name is Rudy Gerdeman or Rudy G.
I started as an intern for Andyman and Randyman in the summer of 1994, when the station still was known as CD101. Shortly after, I became an on-air personality. In 1998, I started the Independent Playground to help support indie-label bands or any independent artist I could find. My passion for radio took me to Los Angeles in 1999, so I left the Independent Playground to newly acquired bad boy, Tom Butler aka Tomb.
I worked in LA for a few months (at a magazine and at a bowling alley), but I missed being on the Playground. So I joined Tom on the show in 2000, and the following year, the Independent Playground won a national award for the Best Commercial Radio Specialty Show from the Plug Awards! We even beat Rodney on the Rock in LA!
I took a long break from commercial radio and traveled the USA a bit, became a human rights activist in Standing Rock, and basically tried to stay alive. In my spare time, I was on community radio locally here in Columbus for about 5 years on and off.
Finally, in 2019, I joined Tom once again for the Independent Playground (every Sunday night from 9 pm to 11 pm). It’s the best two hours of underground music, hosted by two of the coolest punks, on this side of the Mississippi River.
My all-time favorite bands are The Ramones, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Dwarves, The Phantom Limbs, Caustic Resin, Neil Young, The Gun Club, The Cramps, and most bands from the Detroit area.
My current favorite underground bands are Silent, Le Butcherettes, Porridge Radio, Wasp Factory, Chat Pile, Bull Of Heaven, Wovenhand, Git Some, and Morgana (Italy).
I live for music and I truly believe new music keeps your heart and mind healthy and happy throughout our lives. Thanks to everyone who supports the Independent Playground and listens to CD 92.9 FM!
