Adam Newman is a singer-songwriter and pianist based out of Columbus, Ohio. Growing up in the hills of Eastern Kentucky, Newman was exposed to music at a very early age through MTV and his family’s church. At the age of 8, Newman started studying classical piano and found a powerful outlet in what would soon prove to be a very trying environment.
“Sissy” is the follow-up to 2015’s release “Get Out The Dark”, recorded at Blackbird Studio in Nashville, TN and which saw Newman working with legendary producer and engineer Kevin Killen ( Bowie, Kate Bush, U2) and guitarist Gerry Leonard (Bowie, Rufus Wainwright).
For “Sissy”, Newman enlisted Keith Hanlon of Secret Studio in Columbus, OH to handle the recording while enlisting old bandmates to help bring the songs to life. Described by Newman as a “religion-fueled fever dream”, “Sissy” finds the artist taking total control of his vision, incorporating ( for the first time) synths and strings into the arrangements to achieve the sound and cohesion he felt the songs needed.
“The songs ‘Electric’ and ‘Daddy Was A Pistol’ were written 20 years ago, but for me, are a part of the same story and needed to be there”, he said in a recent interview. “I also knew that I wanted there to be a moment of transcendence at the end and that’s why ‘Dreamphone’ is there. It’s me looking ahead and moving on. It’s also acknowledging the extremely rough past couple of years we’ve all been through and that was important for me to do.”
