Fun Size Trending Topics September 23, 2021. His Name? St. Dangerous Of Course CD929

On Tidbit Thursdays, we explore some recent stories in music news. Let’s go!

  • Ahead of their tour this fall, Manchester Orchestra and Jimmy Eat World swapped songs for a duo of covers. Manchester Orchestra covered Jimmy Eat World’s “Table For Glasses” while Jimmy Eat World tackled “Telepath” from Manchester Orchestra. Both covers are pretty impressive. Catch these bands along with Middle Kids on August 19th at KEMBA Live!
  • Vampire Weekend announced the vinyl release of Frog on the Bass Drum, Vol 1, their first live album. The album sold out in less than a week, but appears to be part of a new vinyl club for the band.
  • Fleet Foxes just released two live covers (of Joni Mitchell and The Strokes respectively) on their Bandcamp (available for free download).
  • Arlo Parks has announced a new poetry collection that includes lyrics from her latest album and twenty new poems. The Magic Border: Poetry and Fragments From My Soft Machine is out September 12th.
  • The Beatles are now set to release a “new” song assisted by AI. Don’t let the sensational headlines trick you though: AI was used to extract John Lennon’s voice from an existing recording, not to create a new Lennon vocal part. Peter Jackson assisted in the AI extraction process just as he used AI to restore footage for Get Back. Paul McCartney, ever hopeful for innovations in music, says AI is “kind of scary but also exciting because it’s the future.” Fans speculate that McCartney may finally be preparing to release the third Lennon demo  that Yoko Ono Lennon sent Paul McCartney for Anthology, the same time she sent him what became “Real Love” and “Free as a Bird.” The demo in question is “Now and Then,” a track considered for Anthology but ultimately scrapped because “George didn’t wanna do it” according to McCartney. There is some speculation that the new song will be able to combine elements from the Anthology sessions along with Lennon’s original restored vocal.
  • Olivia Rodrigo teased a new single, “Vampire,” which will be released June 30th.
  • Frank Padilla (@Semper_Knarf on Twitter) recently posted a video clip from The Cure’s May 24th show at the Hollywood Bowl that has gone viral. The video shows Robert Smith specifically singing to his wife Mary as she stands just offstage. Read more about Robert Smith and Mary Poole’s adorable relationship here.
  • Britpop band Pulp have released their own tea! The packaging of the box and of each individual tea bag features lyrics to Pulp songs. They have also promised some new singles.
Editor’s note: Why are more bands not releasing tea? I’m pretty sure I got a Squeeze tea bag at a show a few years back and thought “this is the future.” If it’s a band I really like, I’ll buy whatever tea concoction the musicians come up with!

In Case You Missed It:

  • Tessa Violet released “My God!” from her album of the same name (out July 14th):
  • PJ Harvey released the spooky single “I Inside the Old I Dying” last week. It’s the latest single from her upcoming album I Inside the Old Year Dying (out July 7th).
  • We’ve been playing “Nosebleeds” from MisterWives forthcoming album of the same name (out June 14th). They recently issued another single, “Ultraviolet”:
