Boygenius nods to The Cure by referencing “Boys Don’t Cry.” Catch Boygenius in Columbus on June 23rd!
4) “Punk Rock Girl” by Dead Milkmen
“Punk Rock Girl” mentions a number of other artists including Minnie Pearl, The Beach Boys, and Mojo Nixon, as well as songs like “California Dreamin’” and “Duke of Earl.” The Dead Milkmen are releasing their first new album in nine years tomorrow!

“While Frank Sinatra sings ‘Stormy Weather.’” Catch CAKE at KEMBA Live! September 15th.
2) “Gimme Sympathy” by Metric (Big Room performance)
Metric make reference to The Rolling Stones and The Beatles in “Gimme Sympathy,” with a specific mention of “Here Comes the Sun.” Catch Metric at The Newport on June 30th (or opening for Garbage and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds on July 1st).
1) “Alex Chilton” by The Replacements
Alex Chilton and The Replacements shared a booking agent and Chilton had produced some of the band’s early demos before The Replacements wrote this song referencing Chilton and “I’m in Love with a Girl.”
BONUS TRACK: “Clash City Rockers” by The Clash
The Clash use the rhythm and format of the English Nursery rhyme “Oranges and Lemons” for the middle of the song, during which they reference David Bowie, Gary Glitter, and Prince Far-I.
